School
band braced for big day
The
members of an up-and-coming Hawke's Bay rock band
aren't fazed by the prospect of performing for a
crowd of thousands this weekend - even though their
average age is just 10 years old. The Haumoana school
band will be one of the top acts at Sunday's market
day, an event expected to attract 170 stalls and,
if last year was anything to go by, more than 12,000
people. The band's repertoire combines blues, rock,
reggae and ``some baby stuff'' by the Wiggles. Bass-player
and founder Graham Tippler says the band's ``monstrous''
nine- member line-up has been practising since the
beginning of last term, but a few veterans have
been playing for three years. Another highlight
of the market will be an auction of items donated
by local artists and businesses - including a vasectomy,
with a packet of frozen peas thrown in, courtesy
of Hawke's Bay Hospital urologist Kim Broome. King
Andy of Haumoana, a special guest at the market
day, said he would not be putting in a bid for Dr
Broome's services, despite already having three
royal progeny. ``I'm pretty keen to keep the crown
jewels intact at the moment,'' he said. King Andy,
who was elected to the post in July with a landslide
474 out of 475 votes, will instead hold a stall
selling royally- endorsed juggling balls, slippers
and beanies. He has also promised to distribute
his famous ``know your goat'' information sheets.
The "arts in the park'' market, a fundraiser
for Haumoana School, starts at 10am on Sunday November
3 at Haumoana Memorial Park. It will be opened by
King Andy, Tall Black Paul Henare and Napier MP
Russell Fairbrother. Special parking areas and a
shuttle bus have been organised.
